Ben hogan and Byron nelson were two of the best golfers who ever lived. Never the less Byron doesn't get much credit for his greatness because he retired early at 36. I read this was primarily because his wife wanted him too. Byron was a strong Christian man and God and family were ahead of golf. It is a fact when they were growing up and until Byron retired in August of 1946 he beat Hogan damn near every time they played and particularly head to head. Nelson also beat snead and won a series of challenge matches against Walter Hagen (the best match player in the world). When Nelson hit his stride prior to retirement, nobody beat him. In 1946, the last six months of his competitive golf Hogan started doing better and winning some events with Byron in the field. The truth is Byron had mentally retired and had packed it in at this point. I believe Byron felt he was a better golfer then Ben and was always a humble and Christian man who wouldn't brag on himself and never got due credit from the public. this is my take on Byron playing Ben
