TOPIC: Too steep / tall on my swing plane?

Too steep / tall on my swing plane? 11 months ago #34012

I've been working tons on my swing plane and I think i'm almost there...I was swinging way under plane and setting up too far away, but now i'm getting much more consistent contact...My irons are solid but my driver still acts up...some slices...some pop-up's...some bombs...my question is...have I over compensated and am now too steep?...any opinions or suggestions would be great

That is VERY steep and a little over-the-top.

"Under Plane" is actually desirable on the downswing. You want that club coming in SHALLOW.

Check out Bradley Hughes' thread. Start from page 1 and work your way through. LOTS of good information in there about getting that club coming in shallow, supported by video/photos/quotes from the great ballstrikers.

Like Lee Trevino here (check out how shallow that club is coming down):

Thanks...it seemed steep...am i correct in that my takeaway is pretty good but I'm not dropping in so to speak...image 5 to 6 for trevino seems to suggest this dropping in

Your takeaway is decent, but what happens is that you stop your backswing turn about halfway back, and then you just lift your arms into that high position without continuing to turn your body. Since you have no real coil, you are forced into throwing the club down with your arms to get it to the ball. That's causing the steepness.

Honestly, there shouldn't have to be much conscious dropping of the club into the slot. It will happen if your lower body leads the downswing before you start to release the club.

There are many intricacies within the golf swing...but check these two videos out, in order. This will get you very much on the right track going forward.

First, Tom Kite talking about getting the one-piece takeaway happening:

Next, Ben Hogan talking about the knees and hips initiating the downswing:

give up control to gain control...right? my arms are hijacking my swing, i have to be more patient with my takeaway...thanks for your observations!
