Martin Ayers Group Forum: A group for everyone to discuss my teaching methods. I have based what I teach on many lessons learned both through mentors of mine and by looking at some of the greats of the game. Particularly going back into previous eras, where I believe much of what was learned has been forgotten. There has been many advancements made in Golf, but I believe for every one of those there has been a corresponding piece of wisdom lost.

I'm always open to new ideas, so if you have one, feel free to share it in the group forum, you'll find all kinds of views are welcome.

TOPIC: rolling the right arm?

rolling the right arm? 2 years, 1 month ago #11249

In the video Martin says Elk grabbed his right arm to help him get the feeling of how it rolls up. I feel I need similar help or a clearer picture of how to do this. I start back inside correctly, but I don't understand how to roll the arm correctly. After the hands move back inside, do I just pick the right arm up, into the power position?

Try this diagram. It was posted by a few guys on Monday I believe. If you can either draw it in the sand or on your garage floor with chalk it will help with your intent and your hand position. It will give you an idea of the rolling of the hands as there is really only one way you can roll and stay close to the diagram. Good luck. Keep us posted.

Thanks Chris. I appreciate the diagram. Maybe this is a stupid question, but What do the dotted lines represent? My shoulders? Hips?

The right arm only drill is what you need to revisit in the tape. The right thumb starts out aiming more or less at the ball. Takeaway is in and wound so right thumb aims at spine. Keep following your spine leading with the hand. If you keep aiming it there your whole body will follow it to your best position at the top.

I had to break it down into three steps: wind thumb, wind the forearm, then bring elbow up When I tried initially to do it in one motion, right elbow moved away from my side and right hand ended up on my shoulder.

Thanks Martin and Daryl. I check out the right hand only drill again. I'm just having a hard time comprehending how to wind up. I'll keep you posted on my progress. Thanks again.

I got it Martin! My reading comprehension is terrible. Had my wife (who doesn't play) explain to me and show me how to bring that thumb up the spine from the one arm drill in the video. Guess I was just stuck in my old ways and couldn't grasp the concept. I got it now.

Aj, now that your better half has the most powerful move down, sounds time to buy her some clubs. If I asked my wife to help with my golf swing I think she would throw the knitting needles

Darryl,
Mine would spear me with the needles. Bill
