Martin Ayers Group Forum: A group for everyone to discuss my teaching methods. I have based what I teach on many lessons learned both through mentors of mine and by looking at some of the greats of the game. Particularly going back into previous eras, where I believe much of what was learned has been forgotten. There has been many advancements made in Golf, but I believe for every one of those there has been a corresponding piece of wisdom lost.

I'm always open to new ideas, so if you have one, feel free to share it in the group forum, you'll find all kinds of views are welcome.

Can't hit the driver or fairway woods with this move. I get no height or distance with the driver and with the 3 wood off the fairway the ball just squirts off the face and I feel that I'm chopping at it like an ax. With the irons, I'm getting good distance and accuracy like 70% of the time, the rest are pulls and fat shots. Does the move also applies for the driver and fairway woods?
P.S. I purchased the video.

I originally had the same problem. Sometimes now i still do. What helped me then was pre-setting a little spine tilt. I know its a unfamiliar feeling being so loaded at the top with a driver/3 wood.

Can you post some video of your iron (long, short) and driver/3w swings?

Im still struggling with the long irons(3,4) would love to post some vids once i master this move. One thing I always had trouble with every swing was getting the body moving while leaving the hands behind. This is a big part of the move. The only thing that helped me was when Martin commented on the video of Andy Roddicks serve. His body was rotated before his racket hit the ball. Im trying to feel that "racket drop", this seems to get my body through the ball and ready for that magic move to rotate and smash. Dont even know if this is correct but its working!!

I understand wanting to wait until you master the swing to post great looking video, but in order to troubleshoot, video is the way to go. Martin can likely correct what you are doing very quickly with some footage. Your call though.

I think if you feel like you are chopping then you are forcing your arms back faster than the clubhead can get there which is leading to an ultra steep angle of attack.

I would wager that on a slow motion you would see that your hands along with your thorax has gone some way past the ball at impact. If you do this with a fairway wood or a driver, it just won't work, with an iron you can get away with it but by nature of being so steep in attack you are really reducing the margin of hitting the ball well.

The club still needs to swing, chopping is really hitting at the expense of timing (e.g. just pure strength without the club doing any work). So I think my advice would be relax a little, swing a little easier and keep your thorax behind the ball (some way behind with a driver) to get the angle of attack a little more shallow than it is.

From the point of view of the video, watch Elk's son do it, it can be misleading watching Martin or Elk because they are so strong and fast swinging compared to regular club golfers. Elk's son times the ball nicely if he tried to force a downswing that is as fast as Martin's his muscles wouldn't support it and he would get the shots that you describe.
