Right arm only, helped me tonnes...

Martin Ayers Group Forum: A group for everyone to discuss my teaching methods. I have based what I teach on many lessons learned both through mentors of mine and by looking at some of the greats of the game. Particularly going back into previous eras, where I believe much of what was learned has been forgotten. There has been many advancements made in Golf, but I believe for every one of those there has been a corresponding piece of wisdom lost.

I'm always open to new ideas, so if you have one, feel free to share it in the group forum, you'll find all kinds of views are welcome.

I've been practicing hard for a couple of weeks trying to get the move worked into my swing, yesterday at the practice ground I had what to me was a Eureka moment. Right arm only....

The move is predominantly about the right arm is what I figured, pro's had me hitting balls one handed several times in the past and I watched Mike and Elk's one handed vid recently (I can't find it now but never mind).

When I do the move right arm only I 100% feel every bit of it there are no mixed messages coming from my left side, my balance has to be right because you can't save a 1 handed shot hit off balance, my body moves through the ball because there's nothing in the way and I get lag I want in the top of the swing. In short everything works as intended and I only have 1 hand telling me where the clubface is which really helps me....

I started with a 3 wood, off the deck (I wanted a club with a good long swing arc) took some right arm only practice swings making sure I was really getting the twirl until I was happy that the club was coming through the target line straight (swing too hard you come outside in, not enough body you come way inside out for me). Then I started hitting the balls like normal shots, the shots went straight and over 200 (I'm happy if I hit a 3 wood 240 both handed). I worked it down through the bag until I had it right through, I lost a few practice balls and my right forearm aches a little today but I feel I'll be a better golfer for it.

Putting the left hand on the club after that felt like luxury, I had my rhythm already from right arm only the left arm was just adding some power and a lot of control.

No idea if this will help everyone, but it really helped me so I thought I would post it.

Nice post Sam. I had thought about doing the right arm only drill before but never think of it when I get to the range. I am going to make an effort to do this now with your insights.

I have trouble with the "move" and the "feel of the move" coiming and going. It feels I will have it for a half a bucket and then lose it completely at times. I need some swing thought or feeling I can go to as a way of bringing it back for me. This might help.

Thanks Sam.

This would be a good idea for a Thread - I guess like most of us, I'm pushed for time to get enough golf in so having a library of go to drills relevant to Martins move that we could do indoors in bad weather and out doors would be a useful addition to our practice routines.

One of my faves is using a foam bart simson baseball bat (its the kids not mine!) and tying a headcover to the bottom end of it, them making swings from it. This makes it safe for indoor use and the tied headcover is a bit like a clubhead tied to a piece of fully strained string (I'm sure it was hogan who described that feeling - and isn't it really similar to the move where the mass follows the hands!)

To better describe it - theres about 18" of string between bottom of bat had top of headcover!
