On July 24, 1977, Lee Trevino won the Canadian Open over Peter Oosterhuis. His 280 (-8) total was good enough to capture the $45,000 first place prize. He would go on to win the event just two years later over Ben Crenshaw.
Trevino did not go onto the PGA Tour until he was 28, working as a teaching pro full time before playing on tour. In 1967, he finished high enough in the US Open to gain full status for the rest of the year. He was rookie of the year that year.
He would go on to win 29 tournament on the PGA Tour, many others around the world, 6 major titles, 5 vardon trophies, and earn a spot in the hall of fame along the way. He would also go on to have a very successful Champions Tour career, with over 150 top 10's, 29 wins, and four major titles.
